  • GeoPress 0.1 Now Available for Download

    Mark Smalley 4:12 pm on March 13, 2011 | 0 Comment Permalink | Reply

    GeoPress 0.1 is finally available for download from GitHub. I can’t stress enough that this is meant only as a technology preview / proof of concept to allow people to get an understanding of exactly what BackPress has to offer, as well as giving you all an idea as to what a self-hosted OpenSource Geo-Tagging Platform could do. In a perfect world, developers could start building their own Location-Based Services using the system already, but to be honest, we have a lot left to do.

    Please provide as much feedback, support and criticism as possible, for without community support, encouragement and acknowledgment, this project may never see the light of day…

    It’s been a long day / week / month – so will be posting more updates soon!

    The final features that made it into the release include:

    * DB SCHEMA for Maps, Places and Checkins
    * PERMALINKS for Maps, Places and Checkins
    * FORMS AND VIEWS for Maps, Places and Checkins
    * WYSIWYG Text-Areas for Descriptions
    * LESS.CSS(JS) FOR UI CSS FRAMEWORK
    * Private Maps and Private Places
    * Display Settings per Map
    * Show Either Places or Checkins
    * Markers on Maps Link to Places or Checkins
    * Checkin Markers Link to Places
    * Place Pages Contain Checkin Links
    * ADDED Checkin Links to Places.php
    * ADDED Display Types for Maps (Checkins or Places)
    * ADDED 2 MAPS AT INSTALL (Checkins and Places)
    * ADDED FLUID CSS SUPPORT UP-TO MINIMUM OF 300PX WIDE
    * 3/2/1 COLUMN LAYOUT AUTOMATICALLY ADJUSTED
    * Pick Your Own Username / Password at Sign-Up

  • GeoPress 0.1 Progress Report

    Mark Smalley 3:03 am on March 10, 2011 | 0 Comment Permalink | Reply

    The end (and start of things to come) is finally drawing near – GeoPress is almost at 0.1 and ready for its first public release. It will definitely be launched in March, that much I can say for sure!

    In the meantime, I wanted to give you a quick run-down of the features that made it into 0.1:

    * DB SCHEMA for Maps, Places and Checkins
    * PERMALINKS for Maps, Places and Checkins
    * FORMS AND VIEWS for Maps, Places and Checkins
    * WYSIWYG Text-Areas for Descriptions
    * LESS.CSS(JS) FOR UI CSS FRAMEWORK
    * Private Maps and Private Places
    * Display Settings per Map
    * Show Either Places or Checkins
    * Markers on Maps Link to Places or Checkins
    * Checkin Markers Link to Places
    * Place Pages Contain Checkin Links
    * ADDED Checkin Links to Places.php
    * ADDED Display Types for Maps (Checkins or Places)
    * ADDED 2 MAPS AT INSTALL (Checkins and Places)
    * ADDED FLUID CSS SUPPORT UP-TO MINIMUM OF 300PX WIDE
    * 3/2/1 COLUMN LAYOUT AUTOMATICALLY ADJUSTED

    The one thing I have left to do is improve the install process, for at present, you need to manually create the gp-config.php and .htaccess files with very little instruction. I want to make this more user friendly, and if possible, also try to have it so that you can choose your own username and password at the initial install process. Don’t get me wrong, this is only version 0.1, and is by far meant for any serious use. More than anything, it’s meant as a proof of concept, to not only show what BackPress has to offer, but to also give you an idea as to what an OpenSource Foursquare alternative could look like… Time is the biggest problem, but this is a project that is going to need more community participation that I can presently imagine, so please, keep the feedback and support coming and let’s build this thing together.

    The present roadmap looks like this:

    == PRIOR to 0.2 ==
    * Improved / Consolidated Header Functions
    * Properly Utilization of Head.js (used only for CSS classes in 0.1)
    * All Complex VAR Functions should be ARG Based

    * ADD NEW PLACE button / function for Checkin pages…
    * AJAX LOAD MORE (Default 10) on ALL LISTS
    * Replace Geo-Location Methods to New W3C Standards

    == PRIOR to 0.3 ==
    * Dashboard / Homepage for Default Theme
    * Provide Options Page
    * New Markers and InfoWindows
    * Options for displaying content in markers or outside…
    * Remove Logo (and replace with site name) from Front-End of Theme

    == PRIOR to 0.4 ==
    * Allow for User / Friend Management
    * Replace Lingo references to “I” with Username

    == PRIOR to 0.5 ==

        Hope your patient Guillermo…? Getting things ready for a public release has really been difficult with all my other commitments, but really hope to get back on track soon once wrapping up the freelance projects I’m presently working on…

          Hello Mark, thanks for answer.
          I’m a php developer, I never worked with geo location, but I’m starting a project that will be based on it.
          So if need a beta tester, I’m your man. Just let me know.
          Happy new year!

    Have pretty much completed all UI and basic functionality for Maps, Places and Checkins – now need to fine tune the integration of the three and then get back to the start and the infamous install process. Not to mention the biggest fear of all – documentation…

      Yup, documentation indeed! The toughest part. I think every
      devel ought to invest in a scribe sidekick! :)

    Over the weekend, I converted the CSS UI framework for GeoPress into LESS.css (JS) format, which will make further development and future customization MUCH easier… Need another few weekends to get to 0.1 (public alpha)…

    I estimate it would take about 4 to 5 months of solid coding to get GeoPress to version 1.0, and at the moment, I only have between 5 to 15 hours a week to spend on it – so as such, amongst other things I’ve done to try to help speed this along, we’re now featured on IndieGoGo:

  • GeoPress 0.1 (alpha) Update

    Mark Smalley 4:09 am on September 5, 2010 | 0 Comment Permalink | Reply

    With GeoPress getting closer to its initial 0.1 alpha release, we wanted to share where we are, what we have got done and what we have left to do prior to the initial release…

    We start by logging-in to GeoPress:

    We can then create or edit maps…

    We can then share those maps with friends…

    At the moment, we have the installer packaged and working, but users need to manually edit the gp-config.php file. A single pre-determined user is created at the installation process and there is presently no way of creating new users without using the database.

    However, with that said, the users do work, with validation of credentials, logged-in cookies and so forth.

    The core components to be completed prior to release include Maps, Places and Checkins.

    All the tables for these are already created at sign-up and there is UI functionality for adding or edit either three, but the only component fully developed at this stage is the map, which is used as a canvas for adding places or checkins.

    We also have the pretty permalinks working and a host of other functions, thanks to the back-bone provided by BackPress, but before we can release the initial alpha, we first need to fully-develop the three core components and have the relationships working between them. When we have that working, we will release 0.1 and then start working on polishing off the sign-up and install process.

    It’s worth noting that everything you see in the screen-shots above is accomplished by cross-browser compatible CSS3 with the only image so far included in the entire package being the GeoPress logo. It is our future intention (from 0.2 onwards) for both the back-end and front-end functionality to be entirely HTML 5 and mobile compatible, and its for that very reason that we wanted to start our own platform, one that is fully mobile compatible and specific to geo-tagging…

  • GeoPress 0.1 - Coming Soon

    Mark Smalley 6:16 am on September 1, 2010 | 1 Comment Permalink | Reply

    We finally did it – we started our first BackPress project, and we decided to take WordPress and Geo-Tagging to a whole new level by creating the very first Location-Based-Service in a Box… Inspired by both BuddyPress and GlotPress, GeoPress will allow users to build their very own geo-relevant networks, built from the ground-up as a geo-social-platform, GeoPress utilizes core functionality from WordPress by being developed on an open GPL license and utilizing BackPress…
